Introduction to Nortique

Nortique has been established for many years, initially starting as a hobby restorig our own antique pine furniture. Our friends then started buying our furniture, then their friends, and so on. Due to the popular demand we decided to open our doors to the public, to let you also enjoy our quality furniture and since that day we have grown over time into what you see today.

About Our Name

Many people often ask about our name, Nortique, and where it comes from. Well it's derived from two words, Nordic and Antique. The word Nordic comes from where we started finding and buying what we deemed the best antique furniture many years ago, namely the Scandinavian countries, Denmark, Sweden etc. The Nor is also loosely based on where we live, Norfolk and North Yorkshire . The tique comes from our core business, Antiques or more specifically Antique Pine Furniture. So by taking the Nor and tique and joining them together you have our name, Nortique. Simple really.

Nortiques Furniture

Our core business is antique pine furniture, but 'furniture' to us also means we deal in Fireplaces and Kitchinalia. Also we have a large selection of stripped period doors and a good variety of quality reclaimed timber.

Also we don't purlely only deal in pine, although it is our forte we also have a great deal of knowledge in all other varieties of wood and often sell other types of wooden furniture.

The complete selection can be viewed through the Showroom, which is regularly updated, and accessible on the left-hand side of the website at all times.

We complement all of our furniture with a range of carefully selected goods which you will find in our Shop which is below the Showroom on the website menu. This has such items as handles, escutcheons, knobs, books, decorations etc. And everything you need to restore & finish your own furniture from paint stripper, wax, varnish and wire wool.

About Nortiques Furniture

We carefully select our furniture from the United Kingdom and all around Europe, with the aim to choose furniture characterised by its quality, function, originality and design. We particularly favour sourcing furniture from Scandinavia, as generally we find many more unique designs and the quality in our opinion is usually to a slightly higher standard than from any other area. With Scandinavian furniture it seems there has normally been more time given to selecting better timber with a closer grain and more generosity given to the thickness of the timber used giving an all round better looking more solid and chunky piece.

All the furniture we sell has been hand made to a high standard which is proven true, as it is still here today having lasted the test of time. This gives you the confidence that any piece you choose, as well as being pleasing to the eye, will serve a useful life in your home for many years to come.

The age range of the furniture we deal in is generally between 1800s to early 1900s. Occasionally we have a few later pieces but only if the quality and design catches our attention and warrants a place in our shop.

As previously mentioned the majority of our furniture is pine. But why do we prefer pine? Its hard to say but its ease to work with, the bright warm colour, its strength over time and the pleasing way the finished piece looks in a room briefly sums it up.

Pine has always been used to make furniture and over the past few years we have seen it become an increasingly popular for furniture in houses both old and new. With an increase it demand in the higher end of the pine market, namely antique pine, the scarcity of quality pieces has driven prices up. In fact the price of pine has risen ahead of other woods. But we still manage to find the pieces for you our customers and as you'll see remain very competitive in our pricing.

What we do with the furniture

Our English and continental pine comes to us in a variety of conditions, but quite often it arrives with a poor, painted coating. We then simply apply our magic touch and restore it with tender loving care to the final waxed condition.

With painted furniture we often find over the years the wood underneath has been protected and once removed the piece reveals its former glory. The next stage, whether stripping takes place or not, is any repair work to restore the furniture to as close to its original state as possible. Then the final stage is to gently sand and finish using our unique techniques to produce a finish unlike any other.

To meet your every need you can make use of our services at any stage of the process. Selling the finished product is only one part of our business. You can make use of our paint stripping, restoration, finishing or antiques found to order services. Please see the Service Page for more details.
